Similar to the sconce but possessing a personality all its own is the wall lamp. This wall fixture distinguishes itself by generally having the ability to swivel and swing on a jointed arm. The wall lamp thus juts out farther from the wall than a standard sconce. The swinging arm makes the wall lamp perfect for living rooms and bedrooms or anywhere one does a lot of reading. The adjustable nature of these fixtures puts you in control of the lighting more so than most any other light fixture you can buy.

Finally on the day that you are entertaining guests use only your lamps and spotlights and perhaps light a few candles in the room to create added intimacy. The ceiling light should remain switched off.

Floor lamps and table lamps should be dispersed about the room such that separate from any other lighting they can reasonably light the room for most occasions. The room size will ultimately dictate the number of lamps but if you have some other light source three lamps is a good number to consider - one being a floor lamp. Keep in mind that dark lamp shades really restrict the lamp's overall light output.

Sconces or wall sconces if you prefer are a very popular lighting fixture with models designed for both indoor and outdoor use. Wall sconces generally don't jut out too far from a wall like wall lamps can and are usually fixed in a single position. They can be uplights or downlights and some designs can even be mounted in either position. This feature just adds to the sconce's versatility. Sconces work well in almost any room but are ideal for halls and entryways and can even work well in dining rooms.

In some cases spot lights are also used to bring attention to specific areas of the living room such as the loop created by sofa sets around the TV unit. Corner end tables that come with a living room set are good for creating a platform for decorative lampshades that will lit the entire sofa set area for some extra lighting.

Natural Direct Sunlight. Natural light received from the Sun is the most obvious and healthy source of light we receive during daytime. Though the intensity and quantity of sunlight coming inside the space can be controlled using diffused glasses or curtains on windows. When the direct sunlight falls on the inside walls the color of the walls temporarily changes to a mixture of sunlight plus the original wall shade. This particular phenomenon can be use to our advantage. By finding out the wall that received direct sunlight and painting that wall with bright color a beautiful diffused and "reflected light" can be created absolutely free. This "reflected light" will help in creating an ambience in the living room. Also shadow patterns on this wall will add to some extra excitement if used creatively.

If you have a TV in the room make sure there's no glare on the screen from any of the lights. This can be controlled by placing a table or desk lamp next to or behind the TV.

It's best if you plan the decor of your living room with the lighting in mind. The most important fixture for creating the right mood is the table lamp. So place table lamps in strategic places like the side tables on either side of your sofa or next to the armchair where you like to sit and read. You can also place table lamps on a sideboard a wet bar or a chest. Table lamps act like accent lights lighting up only their surrounding areas. They create interest in the room because there are pockets of light and shadow and the different areas in the room are lit selectively. If your room only had a ceiling light the entire room would be uniformly and perhaps quite brightly lit creating an uninviting cold feel.
